Your Excellency,
On behalf of the largest animal rights organization in Croatia, Animal Friends, I would like to express my disappointment and concern over the recent decision by the Norwegian government to kill the wolf pack Slettås in the wolf zone.
Since the wolf is critically endangered in Norway and enjoys strict legal protection under the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats, it is disturbing that the government has prioritized other interests over the need to protect the wolf in its designated habitat.
Considering the rapid decline of wild animal populations and their habitats in Europe and other parts of the world, one would think that Norway—a country with such beautiful nature—is at the forefront in taking care of its keystone species such as the wolf. Sadly, this is not the case.
In these challenging times, it is essential that countries focus on creating more acceptance for wild animals, including predators. Our own well-being depends on the integrity of ecosystems and concern for other non-human animals who have the right to exist in nature. I, therefore, kindly urge you to ask the Norwegian parliament and the government to review their wolf policy regarding Norway’s responsibilities under the Bern Convention and take urgent steps to change the increasingly hostile course in their policies toward predator animals in general.
