Together with a Bulgarian organization Intimate With Nature Society (IWNS), Animal Friends has started an essay competition titled "How do I understand animal protection?"

The competition, at which college and high-school students from Zagreb and Sofia will participate, will last from October 1, 2003 to December 1, 2003. Upon its ending, three best essays from Bulgaria and Croatia will be published on the web sites of Animal Friends (www.prijatelji-zivotinja.hr) and IWNS (www.iwns.org) and rewarded with 50, 40 and 35 Euros. The authors of the best essays will also have an opportunity to participate on a seminar in Zagreb in February 2004 "How do young people in Eastern Europe understand animal protection?"

Essays will be evaluated by the three-member commission from Bulgaria and Croatia. Their members are:

Bulgaria

Prof. Stefka Naumova, a lecturer of Ecology law at University of Economics, a member of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, a member of American Association of Bioethics, an author of many research works and books in the field of Ecology law;

Dr Madlen Vassileva, doctor of veterinary medicine, a chief expert of Humane treatment of animals in the Eurointegration Department in the National Veterinary Service to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forests;

Peter Kraevski, a writer and a journalist.

Croatia

Suzana Marjanic, Ph. D., Senior Assistant at the Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Research in, Zagreb. Fields of interest: mythical themes in oral literature, folk religion and belief, cultural botany, cultural zoology, ecofeminism and the anthropology of theatre and performance;

Hrvoje Juric, Philosopher, Junior Assistant at the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Fields of interest: bioetichs and ethics;

Snjezana Klopotan, Bachelor of Arts, a graduate of Comparative literature and Ethnology. Co-author and editor of a column Animal Portal in a magazine Zarez, which deals with issues of animal treatment in various aspects: anthropological, cultural, sociological, legal, ethical etc. Animal rights activist.

Assessment criteria:

Essay propositions:

Computer printing, up to 2 to 3 pages (7,200 characters with spaces). Handwritten essays will not enter the competition.
