Historical decision: Actress Pamela Anderson also appealed for a ban on the cruel practice

- So far, the fur trade has been banned by the city of São Paulo and the U.S. state of California

After the recent news that Estonia has banned the breeding of animals for fur, enthusiasm follows as Israel has become the first country in the world to ban the sale of fur as well! "This historical decision is the result of many years of effort by the International Coalition against Fur and local organizations, which shows that the world is moving unstoppably towards ending the horrific torture and killing of animals in the fur industry," said Animal Friends Croatia, which played a key role in banning animal breeding for fur in Croatia.

Last week, former Israeli Environment Minister Gila Gamliel signed a regulation to ban the fur trade in Israel, saying: "Using animal fur to make coats cannot be an excuse for the cruel animal slaughter industry behind it." She added that the use of wild animal skins and furs for the fashion industry is immoral and unnecessary, and as many as 86% of Israelis have given their support to ban the trade.

Both Dan Mathews, senior campaign vice president for PETA, the world’s largest animal rights organization, and honorary director of PETA, actress Pamela Anderson, personally lobbied government officials in Tel Aviv and appealed to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to support the ban of fur. Pamela Anderson thanked Minister Gamliel and wrote to her that her move would help protect millions of animals each year who would otherwise be beaten, killed by electricity or skinned alive.

Breeding animals for fur is extremely callous. Animals spend their entire lives confined in cramped, dirty cages in which they cannot move and are eventually subjected to torturous killing by breaking their necks, choking, poisoning, or genital electrocution. Therefore this victory belongs to all unfortunate animals who suffer and die because of human vanity.

"Apart from the fact that the Israeli ban will save many animals from the hell of the fur industry, there is another reason for countries to follow Israel's example. Crowding sick animals in unhygienic conditions on fur farms creates a perfect cultivation ground for deadly diseases. The new coronavirus has been found on fur farms in a dozen countries - Canada, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Sweden and the United States, resulting in the mass slaughter of tens of millions of animals, warn Animal Friends Croatia.

So far, the production, sale and import of fur has been prohibited by the largest Brazilian city of São Paulo and the U.S. state of California. Fur has also been banned from their collection by a number of top designers and retailers, including big names of the fashion world: Burberry, Gucci, Versace, Michael Kors, Jimmy Choo and Giorgio Armani.

Animal Friends Croatia welcomes this victory for animals and all of humanity and urges everyone not to buy or wear clothing and footwear made of animal skin and fur, but to turn to ubiquitous ethical and environmental alternatives.
