02/22/2022 World Spay Day
Held on the last Tuesday in February each year, World Spay Day advocates spaying, or neutering, advocating it "as a proven means of saving the lives of companion animals, community (feral and stray) cats, and street dogs who might otherwise be put down in a shelter or killed on the street. The day aims to spread awareness of the long-term health benefits of spaying and neutering your cats and dogs. Not only does it enable them to live longer, it also helps keep shelter and stray populations down. By using this national holiday as a reminder, AFC are encouraging veterinary professionals from around the world to participate in World Spay Day to help increase awareness of the need for spay/neuter to save animal lives. AFC has also recently launched the campaign Pay for Spay to double the generous donation by Astra Business Engineering and collect an additional 150,000 Kuna for neutering 1000 dogs and cats.
02/18/2022 Celebrities are calling for help for animals
Matea Frajsberger, Zdenka Kovačiček, Marija Omaljev, Miraj Grbić, Mario Valentić and Dunja Vejzović are just some of the famous people who joined the "Pay for spay" campaign. It aims to raise funds for the free castration of dogs and cats in earthquake-affected areas of Sisak-Moslavina County. "We are very pleased with the great response of companies and individuals, who have paid more than 100,000 HRK since the beginning of February. We are missing another HRK 50,000 to double the generous donation of Astra Business Engineering and raise an additional HRK 150,000 for the castration of 1,000 dogs and cats,” says Dr. med. vet. Svjetlana Prodanović, coordinator of the Animal Protection Network project of the Animal Friends Association, which, after the Friends from Čakovec shelter, is continuing the free castration project this year.

Long-time animal ally Sir Paul McCartney is throwing his weight behind the Save Cruelty-Free Cosmetics European Citizens’ Initiative. “We all thought the battle was over and that cosmetics tests on animals in Europe were a thing of the past, but sadly, that’s not the case. The European Chemicals Agency continues to demand the use of thousands of rabbits, rats, fish, and other animals in cosmetics ingredients tests. But you can help put a stop to it. No animal should suffer for beauty, so if you’re an EU citizen, please go to savecrueltyfree.eu and sign the European Citizens’ Initiative to protect the ban. Signing the petition takes only a minute – and it will help save lives.” The campaign, which was started by PETA entities around the world, as well as Dove, The Body Shop, and more than 100 animal protection organisations, is calling on the European Union (EU) to uphold and strengthen its ban on animal testing for cosmetics. 02/08/2022 Plant-based meat will be cheaper than animal meat sooner than you think
The cost of plant-based meat is projected to reach parity with conventional animal meat by 2023, according to new information from nonprofit organization Good Food Institute (GFI). Achieving price parity is vital for mainstream adoption because consumers are more likely to try a new plant-based option that is not much more expensive than its animal-based counterpart. The animal agriculture industry has been able to keep costs down because it has been slaughtering animals for food for decades at a large scale with the help of government subsidies. However, the plant-based sector is newer and has yet to achieve the same economies of scale. In recent years, major brands and private labels have already attempted to underprice animal meat to further drive demand for plant-based products. In 2020, Trader Joe’s launched its plant-based burger patties made with pea protein and priced them at $4.49 for two quarter-pound patties. Also in 2020, Kroger launched its plant-based chicken ground priced at $6.99 for a one-pound package. Last year, plant-based brand Impossible Foods announced its second price reduction within a year for its plant-based ground meat, decreasing the suggested retail price to $9.32 per pound, a 20 percent drop. And competitor Beyond Meat has also said that it aims to underprice animal protein in at least one category by the end of 2024. (vegnews.com)
