09/30/2019 POPULAR TOUR COMPANY IN INDIA GOES VEGAN

Hyderabad Trekking Club (HTC), one of the most popular trekking and travel companies in India, recently went vegan. Starting this month, HTC will only provide vegan food to travellers during its treks in an effort to reduce its environmental footprint. Each year, the company organizes more than 220 treks across India for nearly 8,000 people. For the initiative, HTC partnered with animal-rights organization Vegan Outreach India as part of its Green Tuesday campaign, which aims to help institutions reduce animal-based foods in favor of vegan options to reduce environmental impact of businesses. "Globally and in India, institutions are reducing their use of animal products and choosing plant-based foods to fight climate change," Richa Mehta, India Campaigns Manager for Vegan Outreach, told VegNews. "This initiative by HTC will encourage people to think about the impact of their food choices on the environment." (vegnews.com)

09/27/2019 PORTUGAL'S OLDEST UNIVERSITY BANS BEEF TO FIGHT CLIMATE CRISIS

The University of Coimbra in Lisbon—the oldest university in Portugal established in 1290—will remove beef from all 14 of its cafeterias in January 2020. University of Coimbra chancellor Amílcar Falcão made the announcement to students on Wednesday, stating that the move will help the university become carbon-neutral by 2030. "We are experiencing a climate emergency and we have to put [the] brakes on this projected environmental catastrophe," Falcão said. “I think the biggest impact is to make people aware of the problem. What is more dramatic is that world leaders do not understand that the future of the planet and of our young people, our children, and grandchildren is at stake, and that it is too worrying not to warn off the problem, even if they are small gestures." The school will also remove many plastic items from campus, such as disposable utensils, straws, and water bottles, and promote its "UC Plants" program where students are invited to plant a tree at a botanical garden which will be transferred to areas devastated by fires and storms. 09/26/2019 DISNEY WORLD TO ADD 400 VEGAN DISHES TO PARKS

Disney will add 400 new plant-based dishes to its parks, starting with quick-service restaurants in Disney World Resort in Florida on October 1—with table-service eateries following on October 3. Disneyland Resort in California will offer the options starting next spring. According to Disney, the move to add more plant-based options is a response to consumer demand. "Our guests will now be able to choose from hundreds of sweet and savory creations, including many brand-new dishes destined to become fan favorites," Disney Parks Editorial Content Director Thomas Smith announced today. In addition to the Florida and California theme parks, Disney will add vegan options to the menus of its hotels in those areas. In an effort to get vegan food on every Disney menu, the company will also expand plant-based options internationally. All of the new dishes will be marked with a green leaf logo for easy identification. (vegnews.com)

09/25/2019 BEEF AND DAIRY INDUSTRIES WILL COLLAPSE BY 2030, REPORT SAYS

The beef and dairy industries are on a path to collapse by 2030, according to an extensive 76-page report by independent think tank RethinkX titled, "The Second Domestication of Plants and Animals, the Disruption of the Cow, and the Collapse of Industrial Livestock Farming." The think tank posits that new technologies are rapidly going to replace the way protein is produced, ultimately eliminating the need for traditional animal agriculture. Instead, a "Food-as-Software" system will soon be in place which RethinkX predicts will be 100 times more land efficient, 10 to 25 times more feedstock efficient, 20 times more time efficient, and 10 times more water efficient, all while producing significantly less waste. "We are on the cusp of the deepest, fastest, most consequential disruption in food and agricultural production since the first domestication of plants and animals ten thousand years ago," the report states. RethinkX estimates that by 2030, the number of cows in the US will decrease by 50 percent and both the beef and dairy industries will be "all but bankrupt"—with similar predictions for other animal-derived products such as other animal meat, eggs, leather, and collagen. By 2035, RethinkX predicts that 60 percent of land in the US used for animal agriculture, including feed production—which equates to 485 million acres or 13 times the size of Iowa—will be free for other uses. 09/23/2019 JAMES CAMERON: "PEOPLE NEED TO WAKE THE F*CK UP" TO THE CLIMATE CRISIS

Award-winning vegan director James Cameron believes people need to take drastic action to fight the impending climate crisis, according to a recent interview with Variety. "People need to wake the f*ck up," Cameron said. "We're going the wrong direction as fast as possible. I like to say that we’re like Thelma and Louise. We're driving straight toward the canyon at 90 miles per hour with the radio cranked up and the top down." To do their part, the vegan director and his vegan wife Suzy Amis Cameron are working on a variety of initiatives. The pair operate vegan MUSE school in California, which is currently being franchised to other locations. The pair also run Verdient Foods, a company that will open a pea- and pulse-processing facility in Canada to support the booming plant-based meat industry. Cameron—who executively produced newly released vegan documentary The Game Changers—only serves vegan food to the crew on set of his four upcoming sequels to Avatar which are slated for release in 2020, 2021, 2024, and 2025. 09/19/2019 VEGANNATION BUYS 15,000 ACRES OF THE AMAZON RAINFOREST JUST TO PROTECT IT

The Israeli company — which launched its own cryptocurrency last year called VeganCoin — describes itself as a "global, vegan, decentralized nation, powered by the blockchain technology." Following the close of a $10 million fundraising round, VeganNation is on a mission to save the Amazon. It has now bought 15,000 acres of the rainforest on a 10-year lease. VeganNation will open its land to preservation groups and activists, ensuring that no animals are intentionally harmed. It will ensure the land is free from exploitation — even the Brazilian government will be unable to cut down trees there. (livekindly.co)

09/18/2019 SODEXO BRINGS ECO-FRIENDLY PLANT-BASED MEALS TO 5,000 CAFETERIAS WORLDWIDE

Foodservice giant Sodexo will soon introduce environmentally friendly plant-based meals to more than 5,000 cafeterias—including those operating inside businesses, government offices, universities, and hospitals—in the United States, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and France. New meals such as Wild Rice Quinoa and Lentil Bowl, Tuscan Chickpea Polenta and Rapini Bowl, and Ube Maitake Tartine will use ingredients from the new Future 50 Foods report. Co-written by Knorr Professional and leading conservation organization WWF-UK, the report identifies 50 of the most nutritious plant-based ingredients based on their nutritional value and relative impact on the environment. The list combines familiar foods, such as lentils, wild rice, and kale, with lesser-known foods such as fonio, pumpkin flowers, and cactus. "When you see there are more than 20,000 known edible plants on our planet, and yet our food comes primarily from a dozen of them, there is definitely opportunity to change and discover new ways of eating," John Wright, senior vice president, Sodexo Food Platform, said. "Today, we are helping consumers as they look for ways to adopt more sustainable diets. Future 50 Foods represents an exciting opportunity for our chefs to innovate in the kitchen and share Sodexo's Love of Food (campaign) with diners in a way that's also good for the planet."  (vegnews.com)

09/16/2019 PITBULL'S MIAMI GRILL DEVELOPING FULL VEGAN MENU AFTER BEYOND BURGER SUCCESS

Florida-based chain Miami Grill—which counts musician Armando Christian "Pitbull" Pérez as its key equity partner—is working to expand its plant-based options after adding the Beyond Burger to its menu last month. It ultimately led us down this path of menu expansion in the plant-based area." While exact menu items have yet to be announced, the chain is exploring a variety of dishes to satisfy what it discovered is a strong demand for plant-based options. "Given the popularity of the Beyond Burger at our restaurants and positive feedback around its great taste, we have decided to begin the process of expanding our plant-based food options," Vogel said. 09/13/2019 FOUR COUNTRIES UNITE TO FORM VEGAN WORLD ALLIANCE

Four countries recently partnered to form the Vegan World Alliance with a mission to create a shared vegan vision and promote veganism worldwide. 09/12/2019 CALIFORNIA MOVES ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING FIRST FUR-FREE STATE

On Tuesday, California State Senate voted in favor of AB 44, a bill that would prohibit the sale and manufacture of new fur statewide. In December 2018, California assembly member Laura Friedman introduced AB 44, which is supported by organizations In Defense of Animals (IDA), Animal Hope in Legislation (AHL), Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation (AHWF), and The Humane Society of the United States. AB 44 will now go to the State Assembly, in order to approve an amendment that would push the enforcement date to 2023 before being presented to California Governor Gavin Newsom for signature. If passed, the statewide ban on the sale and manufacturing of new fur items would impose civil penalties on those in violation. In recent years, several California cities have passed similar bans, including Berkeley, West Hollywood, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and fashion labels (such as Gucci, Versace, and Chanel) have pledged to cease using fur in future collections. Earlier this week, Newsom signed into law The Wildlife Protection Act of 2019 (AB 273) which bans fur trapping across the state—making California the first state in the US to adopt such legislation. 09/10/2019 VEGAN CYCLIST DONATES 1,600 VEGAN MEALS TO THE HUNGRY AS PART OF AN 85-DAY CYCLING TOUR

Vegan cyclist and former professional hockey player Richie Crowley has donated more than 1,600 vegan meals to date to people in need as part of an 85-day Wellness Ride cycling tour across the United States to raise awareness about wellness and the vegan lifestyle. Crowley partnered with plant-based food delivery service Veestro to provide vegan meals through local charities along his riding route, including The Campaign Against Hunger in Brooklyn, the Hunger Network in Cleveland, Operation Food Search in St. Louis, and Food Bank Rockies in Denver. Crowley believes the biggest challenge for changing people's diets to a more healthy, plant-based approach is accessibility and convenience rather than cost. With the help of $5 donations from supporters, his goal is to donate 5,000 meals before ending his cycling tour in Los Angeles on October 10. (vegnews.com)

09/02/2019 FAMED FOODIE GOES VEGAN IN RESPONSE TO AMAZON RAINFOREST FIRES

Eddie Huang—restaurateur, author, and former host of Viceland's food travel show Huang's World—vowed to go vegan. Huang took to Instagram to explain that while he formerly liked to consume animal products, he no longer wanted to partake in the environmentally destructive practice after watching videos of the wildfires currently burning in Brazil's Amazon region—which environmentalists say were started by cattle ranchers to clear land for beef production. "I'm going to go vegan because it takes 20 times less land to feed a vegan than a meat eater, and over 90 percent of the land cleared in the Amazon rainforest since 1970 is used for grazing livestock, but if all of us just stopped eating beef it would solve huge problems," Huang captioned a photo of what he said was his last meal of corned beef at NYC's Junior's restaurant. Huang explained that veganism is often inaccurately categorized as "some uppity white girl thing," and pointed to a variety of cultures that follow vegan lifestyles such as Asian Buddhists, Ital Rasta, and sects of the Hindu religion.
