04/30/2019 BROTHER NATURE URGES HIS 2.7 MILLION FOLLOWERS TO DITCH MEAT

Social media star Kelvin Peña (publicly known as "Brother Nature") is urging followers to eschew meat after meeting a rescued cow who lives at Farm Sanctuary. "Some months back, I visited a sanctuary that rescued animals from slaughterhouses, and I met this cow that had the most sincere look in her eyes, that told me 'we all need help,'" Peña posted on Instagram. "After doing some research, I found out that the meat industry (mainly beef) is one of the most inefficient uses of resources on the planet. Long story short, by simply removing beef from your diet, you can not only help save a life but take a great step into helping save our planet." Peña began his social media career in 2016 by posting videos of himself feeding a family of deer (referred to as "the Deer Squad") who live near his home in East Stroudsburg, PA. The animal lover has since amassed 2.7 million followers by documenting his animal encounters around the world, often checking in at home with his woodland friends Tay Tay and Canela—two deer that have become social media superstars themselves. In October 2018, Peña, whose slogan is "everybody eats," announced on Twitter that he was vegetarian and aiming to transition to veganism. (vegnews.com)

04/29/2019 VEGAN BEER BRAND GUINNESS WILL SOON BE PLASTIC-FREE

Irish beer company Guinness recently announced that it will replace all of its plastic packaging (such as ring carriers and shrinkwrap) with biodegradable cardboard. Guinness' parent company Diageo is investing 18.5 million euros ($20.7 million) in the initiative, which will result in an annual saving of 400 metric tons of plastic. "Managing our environmental impact is important for the planet and the financial sustainability of our business," Oliver Loomes, country director of Diageo Ireland, told the Belfast Telegraph. In 2017, Guinness completed the process of phasing out fish-derived isinglass from its filtration process to become a fully vegan beer company. Guinness will launch its new packaging in Ireland first in August, with the rest of the world to follow in 2020. (vegnews.com)

04/27/2019 SIMON COWELL SAYS HE'S GOING VEGAN

American Idol's most critical judge Simon Cowell recently decided to transition to a plant-based diet, according to an interview with The Sun. The television personality began removing animal products from his diet after learning that he had a host of food allergies. "I was allergic to melon, so I didn't eat it for six months, but I saw this man and he explained it and it made sense," Cowell said. "Within 24 hours I changed my diet and I've not looked back since. You feel better, you look better. I cut out a lot of the stuff I shouldn't have been eating and that was primarily meat, dairy, wheat, sugar—those were the four main things." The Britain's Got Talent judge explained that he will "go the whole way" by removing fish from his diet this year. "It was way easier than you may think," Cowell said. "Like, I used to have yogurt in the morning and I changed it to almond-milk yogurts. I have almond milk in my tea." Cowell reports that he has lost weight, sleeps better, and is more focused after changing his eating habits. (vegnews.com)

04/25/2019 NYC GOVERNMENT WILL SLASH BEEF CONSUMPTION BY 50 PERCENT AND PHASE OUT PROCESSED MEAT

On Earth Day, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the OneNYC2050 plan—which he dubs "New York City's Green New Deal," a $14 billion initiative that focuses on reducing NYC's greenhouse-gas emissions by 30 percent by 2030 with the goal of full carbon neutrality by 2050. The initiative focuses on a number of industries, including the transportation, electricity, and real estate sectors where sweeping energy-efficient changes will be made. NYC's Green New Deal also includes a historic measure to phase out the amount of meat served within city-controlled agencies such as hospitals, schools, and correctional facilities. In the coming years, the mayor plans to reduce the purchase of beef by 50 percent and completely remove processed meat from menus served at such facilities, as well as focusing on banning single-use plastics in foodware. Earlier this year, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams announced that he is running for NYC mayor in 2021, and if he is victorious, the OneNYC2050 initiative might exceed its goals in phasing out animal products from hundreds of millions of meals citywide. 04/23/2019 MILLION DOLLAR VEGAN CAMPAIGN DONATES $100K TO HELP HURRICANE SURVIVORS

Global campaign Million Dollar Vegan (MDV) recently donated $100,000 to nonprofit Chilis on Wheels to support its efforts in helping the survivors of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico. After the 2017 hurricane devastated the region, killing 3,000 people and displacing thousands, Chilis on Wheels served 15,000 vegan meals to those in need and set up a permanent community center in the country's capital city San Juan to continue to help vulnerable Puerto Ricans. Prior to Lent this year, MDV launched a celebrity-backed initiative—led by teen activist Genesis Butler—to encourage Pope Francis to go vegan for Lent in exchange for $1 million donated to his charity of choice. The Pope responded to Butler, who recently visited the Vatican, with a letter that neither accepted nor declined the challenge. Butler pressed on by asking the Pope to meet with her over a vegan lunch to discuss the impact of animal agriculture on climate change—a cause the religious figure said he is passionate about. The Pope has not responded to Butler's latter request. "It was very humbling and inspiring to meet people in Puerto Rico who are helping to rebuild their lives after Hurricane Maria. It was wonderful to see how vegan food—as a sustainable food choice—can help hurricane survivors in a country where many people have been forced to go hungry," Butler said. "Even though the Pope didn't agree to go vegan for Lent, I'm really happy that many people in need will still benefit from this campaign, and that we were able to encourage thousands of people to try a vegan diet—to help animals, our planet, and our health." 04/18/2019 MADRID BANS WILD ANIMAL CIRCUSES

The city of Madrid in Spain recently banned the use of wild animals in circus performances. The ban was enacted in support of a recommendation made by the European Veterinary Federation that posited that the needs of wild animals cannot be met in a circus setting, particularly in terms of providing adequate accommodation and allowing the animals to express their natural behaviors. All circus acts in Madrid—which is the 64th Spanish municipality to enact such a ban—will have one year to phase out any remaining wild animal performances. Nearby, Portugal announced last year that it would transition all wild animals from circuses to sanctuaries by 2024, joining a growing list of countries (such as Mexico, Iran, and the United Kingdom) to ban animal circuses. 04/17/2019 AUSTRALIAN BURGER CHAIN GRILL'D DROPS ALL MEAT FROM MENU FOR 24 HOURS

Today, Australian chain Grill'd removed all meat from its menu to emphasize its new plant-based options made with the vegan Beyond Burger patty. The company declared a "24-Hour Meat Cheat" after learning that 83 percent of Australians consume one meatless meal per week, and one-third would further reduce their meat consumption if great-tasting vegan options were readily available. "Sales of Grill'd's meat-free burgers grew more than 100 percent in the past year alone. The biggest increase we’ve seen is in the number of meat-eaters who are now choosing plant-based options—especially in the under 30s age group," Grill'd Founder Simon Crowe said. "Whether it's for health reasons, animal rights, or climate change, the demand is very real." While the chain plans to begin serving meat again tomorrow, Grill'd aims to transition its menu to be 50 percent plant-based by 2020. (vegnews.com)

04/11/2019 CANADA IS KILLING BABY SEALS AGAIN

Canada has begun its barbaric seal slaughter. In the first week, tens of thousands of defenseless seal pups are clubbed and shot to death. Many suffer for prolonged periods, having been shot but not killed, until sealers jump off their boats and club them to death with hakapiks. The commercial slaughter of seals in Canada is facing its last days, yet despite the growing outcry against it both in Canada and around the world, the Canadian government is allowing it to take place again, leaving countless bloodied bodies in its wake. Many seal pups are so young they haven't even learned how to swim before they're violently killed. Please urge Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop propping up the sealing industry with taxpayers' dollars: peta.org, harpseals.org.

04/10/2019 CHINA'S FIRST VEGAN YOGURT DEBUTS THIS MONTH

Chinese water company Nongfu Spring recently introduced a new line of vegan yogurt products which will hit Shanghai grocery and convenience stores this month. The line—which will be the first plant-based yogurt products to go mainstream in China—will be available in three flavors: walnut, coconut, and almond. According to market research firm Innova Market Insights, plant-based products increased by 62 percent globally between 2013 and 2017. Dairy alternatives are especially high in demand, including non-dairy yogurt, which saw a sales growth of 48 percent during the same four-year period. "The dairy alternatives market has been a particular beneficiary of this trend," Lu Ann Williams, Director of Innovation at Innova Market Insights, said, "with the growing availability and promotion of plant-based options to traditional dairy lines, specifically milk beverages, and cultured products such as yogurt, frozen desserts, and ice cream." 04/05/2019 OATLY LAUNCHES ELDERFLOWER FLAVORED DRINKABLE VEGAN YOGURT

Swedish vegan brand Oatly recently launched Oatgurt, a line of drinkable yogurt made from fermented oats. Oatgurt is available in four flavors: Lemon Elderflower, Strawberry, Natural, and Vanilla. With a consistency similar to dairy-based yogurt, the product can be eaten with granola, berries, in a smoothie, or on its own. "If you can get past the name, it is a pretty progressive product that you can use like yo-gurt only it's made from oats not dairy, so it gives you beta-glucans, nice unsaturated fat, and the good vibes that come from making a thoughtful choice for the planet," Oatly posted on Instagram. "And since the scientist who invented the world's first amazing oat drink and founded our company thought it was cool to just go with the name Oatly, everyone might want to adjust their expectations for rad oat product names anyway." 04/04/2019 LONGTIME BUTCHER SECRETLY GOES VEGAN AFTER WATCHING EARTHLINGS

United Kingdom-resident Brian Kavanagh recently left his 15-year-long career as a butcher to pursue a career that aligned with his ethical beliefs. Kavanagh began working as a butcher when he was 16, a move he made to please his father. Now a father of two himself, Kavanagh was initially influenced by his vegan wife to consider removing animal products from his diet. While working at a meat counter at grocery store Morrison's, Kavanagh made the decision to go vegan after watching animal-rights documentary Earthlings. "I kept it to myself," Kavanagh told BBC. "I didn't tell anyone because I was worried about them making jokes. Before I just looked at it as a piece of meat going on a dinner plate, but then you see it as an animal and not just a steak. I was a bit depressed, it just didn't feel good, so I had to leave." The former butcher now works at vegan company Sgaia Vegan Meats, using his expertise to craft plant-based "mheats" such as bacon, burgers, and sausage. (vegnews.com)

04/01/2019 ICELANDERS DEMAND GOVERNMENT SHUTS DOWN CRUEL WHALE HUNTS

A group of animal-rights groups recently sent a demand letter to the Icelandic government to urge the ban of whale hunting. In February, Kristján Þór Júlíusson, Iceland's Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, allowed the renewal of permits that would allow hunters to kill fin and minke whales until at least 2023. Júlíusson's decision was based on a dubious report that showed that whale populations had stabilized in Iceland and that hunting them again would pose no environmental harm. In their letter, the groups—which include Reykjavik Animal Save, Sea Shepherd Iceland, and Stop Whaling in Iceland—disagreed with Júlíusson's decision and expressed the importance of whales in fighting climate change. The letter pointed out the hypocrisy of hunting whales in Iceland, a country known for whale watching as a tourist attraction. According to the letter, only one percent of Icelanders regularly eat whale meat and 81 percent have never sampled it, according to a Gallup poll highlighted in the letter. In addition to delivering the letter to the government, representatives from the groups protested outside of Parliament this week in hopes of ending whale hunting in Iceland. (vegnews.com)
