Subject: Torture and killing of a rooster during a wedding celebration

Dear Sirs,

We are writing to you on account of a newspaper article published in Slobodna Dalmacija on November 1, 2012, which described a public torture and killing of an animal during a wedding celebration in Knin.

According to the newspaper report, a rooster was first brutally tortured and then killed at a wedding that took place on Saturday, October 27, 2012. While the ceremony was in progress at the church, some of the guests tied the animal to the exhaustion pipe of a car and dragged it along the road until it died. The car to which they tied it was parked next to the entrance to the fire station and, according to the eyewitnesses, the appalled passers-by watched the torturing of the rooster for half an hour before a wedding guest removed the poor animal and put it in his car.

Torture and abuse of animals is prohibited under Article 4 of the Animal Protection Act, as well as the Croatian Penal Law, according to which "Whoever severely maltreats an animal or exposes it to unnecessary sufferance, causes it unnecessary pain or exposes it to suffering by giving vent to base instincts shall be punished by a fine or by imprisonment not exceeding six months." (Article 260, paragraph 1).

Moreover, the perpetrators violated Article 30 of the Law on Disturbing Public Peace and Order since the torturing of the rooster was taking place in public.

Animal Friends has received numerous comments from citizens who were appalled by the revolting act of torturing and killing this rooster. This situation demands a prompt reaction from the institutions in charge, which should prosecute the perpetrators.

With regard to this, we ask that you act quickly in accordance with your power and authority to establish the identity of the perpetrators based on the newspaper article, and to punish them adequately.

We would appreciate if you promptly informed us about the action you have taken, so that we may inform the concerned public and the media.

Best regards,

Luka Oman
President
