04/29/2016 33 LIONS RESCUED FROM CIRCUSES TO BE AIRLIFTED TO AFRICA

Thirty-three lions rescued from circuses in Peru and Colombia will be airlifted to Africa this week, if the money still needed to carry out the operation can be raised, Animal Defenders International, or ADI, said. One of the lions is nearly blind, while another is missing an eye and all had their claws mutilated, ADI said. "These lions have endured hell on earth and now they are heading home to paradise. This is the world for which nature intended these animals for. It is the perfect ending to ADI's operation which has eliminated circus suffering in another country," ADI president Jan Creamer said. ADI has raised half the funds needed to pay for the airlift and is accepting donations at GreaterGood.com to cover the remaining costs. (laht.com)

Followers of the account got to work creating burgers before photographing then and uploading the pictures to Instagram under the hashtag #Bestofveganburger. The Best of Vegan account, which has more than 615,000 followers, is run by Kim-Julie Hansen, a passionate vegan based in Brussels. International Primates Rescue (IPR) founder Sue Mousley said after failed attempts by the owner of Little Falls garden center to improve the living conditions of the monkeys, the rescue team finally managed to get a court order allowing them to relocate the primates to IPR's care facility. The monkeys were given little to no food and water while living inside filthy enclosures, Mousley said. It's not hard to get a vegan to carb-load. Donovan Will is out to prove that a vegan diet doesn't have to slow you down. Health24 caught up with the marathon runner, who having successfully completed the Ironman 70.3km race in January, will take on the Comrades Marathon 90km course on Sunday May 29th. The former bacon sympathizer and current brand manager of Fry's Family Foods found that there was a point where all the information in favour of eating vegan piled up. Will told Health24 "I've come to the realization that our bodies are designed to burn carbohydrates for energy, so cutting the animal products in my diet (which are low in carbohydrates) and eating healthy, unrefined carbs, naturally increased my energy levels."

04/21/2016 POLICE CALM HIPSTER FRENZY AT BERLIN VEGAN RESTAURANT

Police in Berlin had to clear crowds from in front of a new vegan restaurant, after hundreds of hungry hipsters packed the street outside, threatening to bring traffic to a standstill. The party to mark the opening of Dandy Diner had only started 20 minutes earlier in the rapidly gentrifying hip Neukölln neighborhood in southeast Berlin. But on Saturday evening shortly after 8 P.M. police decided that the situation was already spiralling worryingly out of control. By that time there were already 300 people packed into the restaurant and a further 500 waiting outside. Law enforcement refused to budge and told the owners that they had to close down the party immediately, or they would be forced to clear out the shop themselves. Dandy Diner seems to have created a buzz among Berlin's trendies because of the fame of its owners, two well-known fashion bloggers.

04/15/2016 THE OCTOPUS ESCAPED FROM HIS AQUARIUM

New Zealand's National Aquarium has been duped by an octopus. The Toronto Star reports that after living in a tank since 2014, Inky the octopus decided to hightail it to freedom. His daring escape took place under the cover of darkness almost three months ago, but was made public Tuesday. Now, he's probably far off in the Pacific, weaving his tale of prison break for any sea creatures who'll listen. When a maintenance worker left a gap at the top of his enclosure, the cunning invertebrate travelled to a six-inch-wide drain. He then squeezed his football-sized, boneless body into it and slipped away.

04/14/2016 A BEEFY BOD WITHOUT MEAT

Three men who went vegan have reveled how they managed to bulk up their bodies and develop ripped six packs despite not eating meat. Michael Waldron, 32, from Somerset, Thomas Waterfall, 28, from London, and Luigi Miccolis, 32, from Italy, decided to stop eating animal produce mainly for ethical reasons. However, they soon discovered that their new diet had an impact on both their appearance and overall wellbeing. Michael was eating a lot of meat at the time and he saw some videos on YouTube selling the benefits of a vegan diet, so he decided to give it a try as an experiment to see if the benefits claimed were accurate. Luigi explained: "My strongest motivation is ethics: I remember feeling both astonished and a bit embarrassed to make the connection between the slice of meat and the living being it came from." Both men recalled their shock at how dramatic the results were and how quickly they occurred. Londoner Thomas had already adopted a vegetarian diet three years earlier, but had resisted going vegan because of the impact he thought it would have on his strength and fitness. But he now believes the diet has had the opposite effect: "I feel more alert, I sleep better, I feel fitter, my complexion is much brighter - the list goes on." (dailymail.co.uk)

04/11/2016 MIAMI STUDENTS COOK VEGAN MEALS FOR NASA ASTRONAUTS

Last weekend, local students whipped up vegetarian and vegan meals for NASA scientists through the Green Cuisine Challenge at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The project is part of the famous Fairchild Challenge science competition, with the idea being that astronauts will be able to re-create the students' dishes using edible plants grown in space. Last year, Fairchild started a partnership with NASA where local middle- and high-schoolers worked to cultivate plants that could be used in outer space as a sustainable food supply. The plant-based cooking competition is an extension of that effort. Students were chosen to participate based on individual competitions at their respective schools through Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

04/08/2016 NETHERLANDS GOVERNMENT RECOMMENDS A MAXIMUM OF TWO SERVINGS OF MEAT PER WEEK

After measuring the ecological impact of the average Dutch person's diet, the the Netherlands Nutrition Center concluded that eating less meat is better for people's health and the environment, and they recommended that Dutch citizens cut their meat intake to two servings per week. A few other countries are also recommending a reduction in meat consumption for both human and environmental health, but so far, livestock industries have succeeded in watering down recommendations in the United States, even as most other countries have ignored the overwhelming harm to the environment of meat consumption altogether. 04/07/2016 UNISEX FASHION USES "FUTURE" FABRICS INSTEAD OF ANIMALS

For this company, ethical fashion is not an just an aesthetic – it's a methodology. Ecouterre reports that Brave GentleMan is making versatile vegan unisex fashion. The label recognizes the broad appeal of a well-tailored suit and polished oxford, and is making it so no one suffers for a sharp look. They utilize "future" fabrics and alternatives that the company's founder, Joshua Katcher, says outperform traditional animal products. "Futureleather" is a biodegradable, durable, and water-resistant material from Italy that is responsible for some seriously cool shoes. The line also utilizes sheep-free "Futurewool" tweeds that are made from recycled polyester and cotton fibers, and "Futuresilks" that are derived from diverted plastic bottles. Organic-cotton shirting and buttons carved from ivory-like tagua nuts finish the looks. Each elements, paired with ethical labour and gender equality, help Brave GentleMan make apparel people can feel good about wearing. (ecorazzi.com)

04/06/2016 STUDY FINDS MILK ADULTERATED WITH DETERGENT, UREA, AND FORMALIN

The Huffington Post, in association with The Times of India Group, have reported that there's more to fear in milk than just run of the mill pooh. The Department of Biochemistry at Bhavan's Vivekananda College conducted a study on adulterants in milk in Hyderabad, India. They found sucrose, skim milk powder, neutralizers, salt, urea, formalin, hydrogen peroxide and detergents in their samples. While skim milk powder, and salt can only be blamed for reducing the nutritional value of milk, the side effects of urea, formalin (a mixture of water and formaldehyde), and detergents can be responsible for diarrhea, kidney damage, hypertension, and even cancer. The article says formalin is added to prolong shelf life, urea is added to improve the whiteness and consistency of milk, and detergents are mixed with water to mimic the foamy appearance of unadulterated milk. 04/05/2016 VEGAN LOSES APPEAL AGAINST SWISS MILITARY SERVICE VETO

Back in December a 19-year-old Antoni Da Campo, a strict vegan and member of animal rights organization PEA who lives in the Swiss canton of Valais, passed the medical tests required by the army for those undertaking military service, which is obligatory for all able-bodied men in Switzerland. However he was told he was "doubly unfit" for service because the army could accommodate neither his vegan diet nor his unwillingness to wear leather boots. Two weeks ago he failed in his appeal against the decision at a court in Lausanne. Speaking to The Local, Da Campo said: "They declared me doubly unacceptable, meaning that I can't do civil service either. It's for that reason that I find their decision discriminatory and arbitrary. I know several vegans who are in the army and there is no problem but apparently it wasn't possible [for me]." Although he refused to wear leather boots, Da Campo was willing to pay for synthetic boots himself, but that wasn't enough to sway the army. Given the decision vetoes him for both military and civil service, he would be liable to pay the exemption tax that anyone declared unfit to serve must pay until the age of 30.

04/04/2016 IRAN BANS USE OF WILD ANIMALS IN CIRCUSES

Iran's Department of Environment announced it will not issue permits allowing the use of wildlife in circuses, effectively banning wild animal acts in all 31 states. The measure follows the successful "No to Circus!" campaign launched by Animal Rights Watch in September 2014 and supported by Animal Defenders International, including 6,000 supporters who called for action. The initiative has led to 13 circuses ending their use of such acts in just four months. (onegreenplanet.org)

04/01/2016 FLORIDA'S LARGEST BEEF-PACKING FACILITY TO SHUT DOORS

Florida's largest beef-packing plant, Central Beef—which has been in operation since 1946 and processes up to 750 cows per day—will close by the end of May. According to local news outlet Daily Commercial, Central Beef has struggled to secure funding and investment, had issues with contaminated wastewater, and ultimately succumbed to the steady drop in United States per capita beef consumption, which fell from 74.7 pounds in 1965 to 53.9 pounds in 2015. The facility has filed a required 60-day notice with the state detailing its plans to layoff all of its 214 workers. In addition to the closure of Israel's largest slaughterhouse last year, public awareness about the disastrous effects of animal agriculture is creating a kill-floor worker shortage in Canada.
