08/31/2011 EUROPE INTRODUCES NEW PLANT-BASED ICE CREAM "LUPINESE" TO MARKET
Europe has been a leader in introducing new, unique and sometimes odd ice cream dishes to market. The latest ice cream dish to be released in Europe is made from the reedlike plant called Lupin, making the ice cream completely plant-based. Lupin-based ice cream is supposed to taste more like a creamy dairy-based ice cream and according to informal taste tests it is living up to those standards. Those who are lactose intolerant have had the option of soy-based ice creams, however those often lacked in taste and texture appeal. Researchers at Fraunhofer Institute believe they have solved the problem by using sweet blue lupin as a base. Plant-based ice cream using lupin has a higher-quality protein level than ice creams made from soy. This is what gives lupin-based ice cream a texture and creaminess closer to dairy ice creams, but allows those who are lactose intolerant to still enjoy a scoop without any nasty side effects.

The Faroe Islands are known for their annual pilot whale hunt. About 800 pilot whales are killed each year for food, even though the Islands' medical officers have warned that the whale meat contains dangerous levels of mercury, PCBs and DDT residues. However, at this point, the hunt is still considered to have cultural significance. The Faroese Animal Protection Organization invited "The Whale" to premiere on the island to bring more attention to the issue.
08/24/2011 BILL CLINTON SAYS HE'S NOW FULLY VEGAN
Former President Bill Clinton has had a legendary appetite. When he first took office his diet was a vegan's nightmare; steaks, hamburgers, chicken and a little bit of fish thrown in for good measure. Over the past two decades Clinton has gone from being an omnivore with a love of greasy hamburgers to a happier, healthier vegetarian and now, vegan. Clinton had often struggled with his wieght while in office, but wasn't his only health concern. In an interview with CNNs Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Clinton remembered how lucky he was that he did not die of a heart attack when he felt the first tightness in his chest before the quadruple bypass and the need to cut down on calories and lower his cholesterol. Clinton now enjoys a diet that includes no meat, no dairy, no eggs, and almost no oil. Since Clinton's change over to a vegetarian/vegan diet he has dropped 20lbs, is healthier, and claims he has more energy.
08/24/2011 PETA WANTS MARS TO BE AN ALL-VEGAN PLANET
PETA isn't just looking to make Earth a vegan planet, they have their sights set on Mars too. PETA recently sent out a press release about rocket producer SpaceX and their plans to send flights to Mars to create a colony. According to the animal rights organization, "the Martian colony is an opportunity to make a kind civilization in which humans don't exploit other beings. And since the animal agriculture industry is toxic to human health and to the environment, an all-vegan civilization would ensure that the new Martian citizens would have long and healthy futures." SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk's response to PETA's letter was somewhat supportive of the idea. He told Space.com, "I'm a big fan of free choice for any future Martian colony. That said, it is likely that early Mars colonists would have a mostly vegetable diet, because of the energy and space needed to raise farm animals."

Well the organization is now working on a new project and it's none other than a porn site. You will be able to find the site at peta.xxx and it will be "a pornography site that draws attention to the plight of animals," PETA spokeswoman Lindsay Rajt said. Instead of shunning the porn industry, PETA looks to embrace "adult entertainment" to help its overall cause. PETA is widely known for its "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" ad campaigns with celebrities like Eva Mendes and Khloe Kardashian showing off their skin and bones in support of animals. Will more skin be shown on the porn site? Well you’ll just have to wait and see.
08/20/2011 UNSPEAKABLE CRUELTY TO TURTLES IN OHIO COUNTY
Ohio County, Indiana, is home to an extraordinarily cruel event called "Snapperfest" scheduled for today, August 20. Every year at the Campshore Campground, wild-caught snapping turtles endure terrible violence at the hands of participants. The frightened animals are grabbed by their tails and repeatedly slammed to the ground. Their heads are yanked from their shells, and they are then swung around until "contestants" are able to wrap their fists around the animals' necks. PETA, without success, appealed to the compassion of the Ohio County commissioners. Now it's your turn. Please contact the commissioners and the campground and politely ask that they do the right thing and replace this cruel event.

08/18/2011 NYC VEGAN BODEGA COULD BE A REALITY
NYC has always been a place for new trends to emerge and spread to a hodgepodge of people. For Vegans, this could mean the start of vegan bodegas all over the country, starting in NYC. It seems like a dream, but it could soon be a reality. Eric Hopf and family have devised a plan of action to get the first vegan bodega up and running. First they will need $15k in start up funds, so they have started an Indiegogo Campaign to raise the money, promote awareness, and gain support. NYC is teeming with vegan friendly restaurants and vegan food stuffs, but having them all in one place is something that is missing from the city. The Hopf's appear to be on the right track to building a movement to change that.

Because shark populations are in such dire straits, there's no reason for people to be eating these threatened swimmers," and asks signers to "tell Food Network that you want a policy stating that shark will not be featured as an ingredient on air, in the magazine, or in recipes posted on Food Network-owned Web sites."

Kristen Bauer has voiced her support for the ban and is urging the EU to put the legislation into action in 2013. In Bauer's letter to John Dalli, European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, she says "No animal should suffer and die to test lipstick or eye shadow. That's why I'm writing to urge you to keep the European Union on the path to modern, innovative cosmetics testing."
08/16/2011 RICHARD BRANSON SWIMS WITH SHARKS TO RAISE AWARENESS OF SHARK FINNING
Richard Branson teamed up with WildAid and swam with about three hundred sharks off of Cancun, Mexico to raise awareness about the horrors of the shark finning industry. Three hundred may sound like a big scary number, but Branson wasn't exactly swimming with Jaws. He took a dip with the whale shark, a species that can grow to be over forty feet long and is considered to be a gentle giant. Branson said in a video about the issue, "Believe it or not, some people cut the fin off these beautiful, beautiful creatures to eat and throw the rest of the whale shark back into the water to die. It's too sad for words." It's estimated that over seventy million sharks are killed in this manner each year for their fins. Many species are facing extinction due to overfishing. Currently the whale shark is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
08/14/2011 MOTHER BEAR KILLS CUB THEN SELF AT CHINESE BILE FARM

The enraged mother bear broke free from her cage causing the workers to scatter in fear. She then made her way to her frightened cub and proceeded to make a futile attempt to free the scared animal. After efforts to free her offspring failed, she hugged her cub before strangling it to death. 08/11/2011 ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUPS RESPOND TO RINGLING BROS. ELEPHANT'S COLLAPSE
Animal rights organizations are speaking out against Ringling in reaction to an incident involving Sarah, on Sunday night in Anaheim. Sarah was being loaded onto a train when she collapsed and fell to the ground, according to activists who caught the fall on camera. Animal Defenders International (ADI) wants the USDA to check Sarah's condition. They also made reference to earlier examinations completed by veterinarians who found Sarah, along with others, to be ill or injured and improperly cared for. According to PETA, just weeks ago, two independent veterinarians with many years of experience with elephants analyzed video footage of Ringling's elephant walk and opening night performance in Los Angeles and determined that one of the elephants "is clinically lame to the point of being crippled. Bob Barker is inviting five Texas chimps to "come on down" to Louisiana. As part of a relocation effort, the former game show host and longtime animal-rights activist recently donated $230,000 to the Keithville, LA-based Chimp Haven sanctuary. The money will be used to expand the existing chimp habitat to make room for the new chimpanzees, who were living in a now-bankrupt Texas research laboratory. In addition to helping fund the expansion, his donation will also cover the Texas chimps' care for one year, and serves as the launching pad for Chimp Haven's plan to provide more homes to non-government supported chimps in need. According to Barker, Chimp Haven is a model sanctuary, featuring 200-acres of forest that allows chimps to live as though they are in the wild.
08/06/2011 DEADLY SALMONELLA OUTBREAK LINKED TO CONTAMINATED GROUND TURKEY
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believe that the Salmonella outbreak that has sickened 76 people so far and killed at least one California resident is linked to contaminated ground turkey. These illnesses date back to March, when cultures of ground turkey from four retail locations "showed contamination with the same strain of Salmonella," possibly from the same factory. USDA has not issued a recall, claiming there is little epidemiological information linking the illnesses conclusively to any specific product or establishment. Meanwhile, the outbreak is spreading. According to the article, Michigan and Ohio reported the highest number of illnesses, with ten each. Other states reporting Salmonella illnesses attributed to contaminated ground turkey are Texas, Illinois, California, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. 08/04/2011 THOUSANDS OF UK MONKEYS TESTED WITHOUT SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE
A panel led by Sir Patrick Bateson, president of the Zoological Society of London, has concluded that over nine percent of all licensed experiments on monkeys between 1996 and 2006 in the United Kingdom were conducted without a benefit to science or medicine. Some scientists who conducted these failed experiments neglected to publish details of their research. The panel spoke strongly against such unscientific practice: "Researchers using NHPs (non-human primates) have a moral obligation to publish results - even if negative - in order to prevent work being repeated unnecessarily... the funders (of future experiments) should consider with particular care the likely balance of the animal welfare cost against the potential benefits arising from funding that application."
08/04/2011 HAYDEN PANETTIERE APPLAUDS OBAMA'S STAND AGAINST ICELANDING WHALING
Hayden Panettiere has voiced her support for President Obama’s stance on Iceland's whaling. In 2006, Iceland resumed its whaling operations despite a moratorium on commercial whaling established by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. While many have criticized Obama for backing down on his campaign promises to protect whales and supporting efforts to lift the ban on commercial whaling, the president is now condemning Iceland's disregard for the moratorium. According to the Associated Press, Obama's administration "will cite Iceland under a domestic law that allows the president to act against foreign nationals or countries who flout international animal conservation rules." The United States has now threatened political and trade sanctions against Iceland. Hayden Panettiere, a vegetarian and spokesperson for The Whaleman Foundation's Save The Whales Again campaign, has said "We commend President Obama and his administration for taking this strong action against Iceland and its barbaric whaling industry... and we urge the President to take similar action against Japan and Norway as well!"
